Energy Assistance Program
MCAAA provides funding to CAAs who make payments towards client energy bills. For this program we utilize our network of CAAs. The partnerships that exist between CAAs,and state and local MDHS offices, and other community groups have resulted in better coordination of services, thus expanding the safety net that exists in the State of Michigan to include those who may not be eligible for state or county programs. CAAs work with other human service providers in their area as well as utility companies, deliverable fuel providers, and other assistance providers to maximize the services available to the low-income client. CAAs can collaborate with a wide range of local entities to maximize resource capabilities, i.e., Michigan Department of Human Services, MPSC, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and others, to cost share expenses for emergency services. Cooperative arrangements are also in place with schools, faith-based organizations, and childcare groups to provide children’s programs. In addition, CAAs work with groups and local units of government in implementing strategies for various improvements, to solve problems, and address unmet needs. In order to reduce the burden that energy costs place on low-income families, CAAs regularly refer applicants to their weatherization and client education program, as well as other services offered by the CAA such as money management classes, life skills classes, and food assistance to name a few.
