Children with FAS have facial abnormalities, pronounced neuro-developmental disorders and growth deficits. Prevalence estimates of FAS range from 0.3 to 2 per 1,000 live births. Prevalence estimates of children affected by conditions along the full spectrum (FASD) are as high as 1 in 10. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studies find that approximately 1 in 2 childbearing-aged women report past-month alcohol use, with 1 in 8 reporting binge drinking. Many of these women who are sexually active but not using contraception will become pregnant and are at risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP).
